Special Session: Evolutionary Fuzzy Systems 2017

Organizers: Yusuke Nojima, Rafael Alcalá, Hisao Ishibuchi

This session has been accepted at the FUZZ-IEEE 2017 conference which will be held in Naples, Italy at July 9-12, 2017.

For more than two decades, evolutionary computation and various meta-heuristics have frequently been used for fuzzy system design under the name of evolutionary fuzzy systems. Their learning and adaptation capabilities enable structure and parameter optimization of fuzzy systems for many kinds of machine learning tasks such as modeling, classification, and rule mining. Their flexible frameworks also enable to handle multiple objectives like accuracy and interpretability maximization and many kinds of data types like imbalanced, missing, and privacy-preserving data sets. Evolutionary fuzzy systems have frequently been used in a wide variety of applications. For example, the recent success of genetic fuzzy tree (ALPHA) proves the great potential of evolutionary fuzzy systems in AI. The aim of this session is to provide a forum to disseminate and discuss recent and significant research efforts on evolutionary fuzzy systems in order to deal with current challenges on this topic.

This is an activity of the Task Force on Evolutionary Fuzzy Systems within the IEEE CIS Fuzzy Systems TC. Task Force Chair and Vice-chair: Yusuke Nojima and Rafael Alcalá, respectively. Since this session has been annually organized from FUZZ-IEEE 2009 to present, this is its 9th edition.

Scope and Topics

The session is open to any high quality submission from researchers working at the particular intersection of evolutionary algorithms and fuzzy systems. The topics of this special session are as follows:

  • Evolutionary Learning/Tuning of Fuzzy Rule-Based Systems
  • Evolutionary Selection of Fuzzy Rules
  • Interpretability-Accuracy Trade-off
  • Multiobjective Evolutionary Fuzzy Systems
  • Evolutionary Fuzzy Tree
  • Evolutionary Fuzzy Neural Networks
  • Evolutionary Fuzzy Clustering
  • Swarm Intelligence for Fuzzy Systems
  • Preprocessing and Postprocessing for Evolutionary Fuzzy Systems
  • Applications of Evolutionary Fuzzy Systems to Real World Problems

Important Dates

  • Special session organizers would be able to better control and handle those contributions that will take part in the special session if they receive tentative titles and authors before the submission deadline. Please, send this information at your earliest convenience (this is not essential) to the organizers by email.
  • Deadline for Papers Submission (according FUZZ-IEEE 2017 instructions): January 25, 2017.
    • Each paper should follow the formatting guidelines for the conference, which can be consulted here (see sections Templates and Style).
    • To submit your paper, please use the Electronic Submission System for FUZZ-IEEE 2017 once it is open (still not open) to fill in the author and paper information forms and to attach a PDF camera ready version of the paper. When making a submission, the author must choose "Evolutionary Fuzzy Systems" special session in the main research topic input box (please take care on this selection since there are close titles in other topics).
  • By March 10, 2017, authors will receive the notification of acceptance/rejection.
  • Deadline for Camera-ready papers: April 8, 2017.
